New rules came into effect yesterday that are to tighten the control over who is allowed to do work on domestic and commercial gas installations, flues and appliances.

Previously, works like this were to be carried out by an engineer registered under the 'Corgi' register system. This was the industry stamp that was supposed to be a guarantee of the engineer’s suitability, however some engineers were falling through the cracks, and getting away with some 'cowboy' repairs.

The new industry standard is The Gas Safety Register, with slightly tighter regulations for approvals of engineers; it should prove to be a welcome assurance for landlords and tenants alike.

From today, Corgi registration is no longer valid for works being carried out, and any heating engineer we use, will be registered under the new scheme.

With no grace period being given for the change over, and an apparent lack of publicity from the 'powers-that-be', some agents and engineers have been slow on the up-take, but will be breaking the law if they do not adhere to the change.

At Supa Rent, we will only use engineers who are registered. The same applies for all our contractors; they must be professional, insured and registered.
