Here at Supa Rent, we have noticed an increase in the amount of requests coming in for improvements to properties. 'Can I re-paint the bathroom?' 'Can I re-do the garden?' and so-on. Landlords, tenants and homeowners are making their way back to the heady days of the 1950's when it was better to make do and mend than buy new. Since the advent of the TV makeover show, everyone seems capable of a bit of DIY..........or so they think. Nine times out of ten, to a landlord, this is not a problem. A tenant requests permission to modify or better something and the usual response is...'as long as it’s done by someone who knows what they are doing, and it is done to the same standard or better as it was found'. But sometimes DIY leads to headaches for all concerned. Recently a tenant called us asking if it were possible that we come and remove some bricks from the yard. 'What bricks?' we asked. The reply was something a landlord, or an agent working on behalf of the landlord, never wants to hear....'I’ve been knocking down the walls and haven’t finished yet, the local kids are starting to throw the bricks about’!!!!! ALARM BELLS rang and we rushed over our head of property maintenance. When he arrived he found that the tenant had started to knock down the coal/wheelie bin store. He had not asked permission to do this, and had no building experience. Once we had explained to him where he had gone wrong, the tenant realised his mistake and was full of apology. Home improvement and DIY is a great way to save money. Supa Rent strongly advises you get permission from your landlord, and have the work done by someone who knows what they are doing.
